✨Magic Minutes Approved: Top 5 Picture Books for Connection, Laughter & Heart

There’s nothing better than story time with your little one. It’s the perfect time to invite your child into a deeper conversation about the book and hear what they think. Here are our five favorites.

Dragons Love Tacos

Why it’s Magic Minutes approved:

This one is pure joy. It invites laughter, imagination, and participation. Your child won’t just listen, they’ll jump in. It’s the kind of book that turns into a shared experience (and maybe even a taco night after!) It can’t get any better than a taco night!

Questions for Connection:

  • What’s the most ridiculous taco we could ever make? Would it have cheese on it or something totally crazy like ice cream?

  • Okay, but wait, would a dragon LOVE it, run away screaming or breathe fire on us if we served it to him?

The Rabbit Listened

Why it’s Magic Minutes approved:

This story gently teaches one of the most powerful things a child can feel…being heard. It opens the door for meaningful conversations and reminds us that connection isn’t about fixing, it’s about presence. Oh man, my toes are stepped on with this one. How many times have I tried to fix every problem that my kids brought to me…still do 🥹but I’m getting better.

Questions for Connection:

  • Can you tell me about something that made you sad or frustrated today?

  • What helped you feel a little better or what do you wish would have helped you feel better?

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!

Why it’s Magic Minutes approved:

Get ready to laugh. Kids LOVE being part of this story. This was one of our family favorites and I still stop and pick it up when I’m in the bookstore. It builds connection through play, voice, and interaction. All are perfect for those wiggly moments when sitting still just isn’t happening.

Questions for Connection:

  • If the pigeon did drive the bus, what SUPER SILLY song would he blast the whole time?

  • Would he sing it loud and crazy or forget the words and make them up?

Chooch Helped

Why it’s Magic Minutes approved:

A beautiful story about patience, perspective, and seeing the good in others. I wanted to find a book to share that helped with growing families and showed ways to talk about connection when the baby isn’t the baby any longer. This book creates those “pause and talk” moments that build empathy and confidence in your child’s heart.

Questions for Connection:

  • Have you ever felt like someone didn’t notice how you were trying to help?

  • What did that feel like inside?

Where Does God Sleep, Momma?

Why it’s Magic Minutes approved:

This one slows everything down. Which is what I needed most at bedtime and it was a Perossa 5 favorite. We read it so much that my firstborn had it memorized by age 3. Naturally, I assumed I was raising a tiny genius 😉This book invites quiet, tender conversations about God’s presence in a way that a child can actually feel. It’s perfect for bedtime moments, where their tiny hearts are soft, questions come out, and connection goes deeper than words.

Questions for Connection:

  • Where do you feel closest to God?

  • What do you think He feels about you at that moment?
